At the 2014 Learning Technologies Conference in London, I had dinner with Brian Solis, a well-bigstock-rolling-up-the-sleves-722689known digital analyst and keynote speaker. Brian is the principal at Altimeter Group, a research and advisory firm, and author of the bestselling books The End of Business as UsualEngage! and What's the Future of Business?

Amidst an impassioned discussion about the future of the learning industry, Brian mentioned that he works in the area of “disruptive technology.” Of course, I asked him what that meant, and he responded that it is technology that disrupts the status quo. While disruption often is viewed as negative, Brian works to leverage it for the good of the industry.

IntelI (Jim) was watching TV a few weeks ago and half-heartedly listening to what Intel Computers was promoting. The closing challenge of that commercial, however, hit me hard: “Are you going to watch things happen, or make things happen?" 

My instant thought was, “This is one of the big premises of our model. I wish I had thought of that powerful statement first!”

In training, we certainly talk a lot about informal learning. But as training professionals, are we leveraging the power of it for ourselves?

When I (Wendy) was a training manager about a decade ago, I joined my local ASTD chapter with the goal of networking with other training professionals. I didn’t have any particularly high expectations for the value, but was really struck by how a few hours and little investment really benefited me.

Level 3 in Action: Update from the Don Kirkpatrick Scholarship Winner

Since earning his Kirkpatrick bronze level certification in November 2013, Jared Allen has initiated aJarednumber of positive changes to the training conducted at his company, Goodwill of Central Arizona.

Jared has embarked upon three distinct initiatives. The first was to completely rewrite the course evaluation used in their New Hire Orientation program, making it student centered with questions that will allow them to better refine the program as necessary.
