4th of July

Happy 4th of July! I trust you have some sort of fun activities planned. I have time planned with the ‘five f’s’: family, friends, fireworks, food, and fishing.

I will also make time to consider what this holiday means to me. This year I began by thinking about my dad in 1944. He was a private first class in the US Army fighting in France and Belgium to keep our country and a lot of other people free.

My specific image begins decades ago, shortly after D-Day, when my dad and his company were ordered to hold a small bridge in France “at all costs”. He didn’t much like the thought of that especially when they heard the rumbling of German tanks approaching their bridge sometime after midnight. They were all “scared to death” (his words to me), but when the time came to defend the bridge, “our training kicked in and we all did what we were trained to do. We held the bridge until reinforcements came.”

I often think about that when I have the privilege to work with soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen and women who, in different ways, are doing the same thing. They are “holding the bridge” for us.

I want to most sincerely thank those of you who have served in our Armed Forces, who are serving or are training those who do. These are not just polite, politically correct words, but come from my heart.

Please take a look at the images that are included in this blog. A picture is worth a thousand words and these speak volumes more than I could ever express.
