Kirkpatrick Quick Tip Vol. 2 #28

Most training professionals do not question the importance and use of training evaluation data. Professionals vary widely, however, in terms of the quantity of data they gather.

How much data do you really need? Read this brief quick tip for some practical pointers.

Training evaluation has three purposes:

  1. Improve the program
  2. Improve on-the-job performance and contribute to organizational results
  3. Show the value that training and development bring to the organization

Review one of your own evaluation forms using these purposes as your guide. Label each evaluation with the purpose it is designed to fulfill, and describe how the data will be used in determining if the purpose was fulfilled. Then ask yourself these questions:

  • Based on the timing, does the form do a thorough job of gathering the necessary information?
  • Are there numerous questions that fulfill the same purpose? If so, are any redundant?
  • Is data from each question being used? If not, should the question be eliminated?
  • Are there any questions that do not fulfill any of the purposes? If so, are they necessary?

These simple steps will help you to streamline your evaluation forms so that you get information you need without wasting precious resources gathering irrelevant and unused information.
